Genetics, health, age – there are a lot of things that have an effect on weight gain and weight loss. But your own behaviors do play a significant role in your ability to gain or lose weight. That’s why any effective medical weight loss is also going to have a very strong behavior modification component.

There is no way around it – if your behaviors stay the same, then your weight will stay the same, and if you want to lose weight and keep the weight off, the behaviors you exhibit now will need to change.

What Are the Behaviors That May Need Modification?

Nearly everyone suffering from obesity has had some period of time where they’ve tried to lose weight and either failed or couldn’t keep the weight off. Usually that’s because of a variety of behaviors that many people struggle with on a regular basis. These include:

  • Unhealthy Eating – You’ll have to control why you eat unhealthy, whether it’s quantity (food addiction or the lack of an “off” switch on hunger), type (burgers vs. salad), cheating (6 days of healthy foods and one day of food binging) or something else. You’ll need to both discover why you’re not eating healthy, and how to make sure you’re eating less.
  • Lack of Exercise/Movement – You have to exercise. There is no way around it. So why don’t you? Find out why you’re not motivated to exercise, why you struggle with it, and more. You have to figure out how to make sure you keep moving and how to make sure you exercise, no matter what you have to do or how much time you think you have.
  • Mental Health – Mental health also plays a pretty significant component in weight management, and so you’ll also need to make sure that you’re working on your mental health as well. Are you a nervous eater? Do you have low energy because of depression? These are issues that will need to be addressed.

Behavioral modification plays a significant role in weight loss, and in most medical weight loss settings, some aspect of these behavioral modification recommendations are going to play a role. You’ll need to make sure that you’re addressing these yourself if you’re planning on truly losing weight and want to keep it off.
